Spending refreshing time outdoors is one of the simplest pleasures we can grant ourselves, yet it can sometimes be difficult to make time for without the distractions of work, our social lives and other subjects that can all to easily interrupt us with one small “bing” of the mobile phone. Disconnecting from the distractions of everyday life and getting outdoors without our tech devices is beneficial for many reasons relating to our health and wellbeing. Here are some of the top advantages:

Improvement of mental health – being outdoors has been found to lower blood pressure, reduce stress-related hormones - adrenaline and cortisol, improve our mood, and even assist in decreasing anxiety and depression. Having time to ourselves outdoors also serves as a perfect opportunity to release emotions and think without disturbance. There really is nothing quite like therapeutic nature!

Encouragement of physical activity – there’s just something rejuvenating about the great outdoors that drives us to be more physically active, whether it be by taking a stroll, running, cycling or playing a sport. There are so many wonderful ways to exercise outdoors for leisure or as part of a program, and it can be so easy to participate and find the motivation to get active once disconnected from our devices.

Time to focus on yourself – taking a break from distractions and clutter in the natural environment serves as an opportunity to focus on yourself, your own thoughts, and what is important to you.

Reconnect with the outdoors – being outside is a great chance to rediscover something that you love about nature, perhaps you’re interested in native plants, certain landscapes, foraging for wild ingredients or birdwatching. What better a way to stock up on some Vitamin D than by pursuing an interest of the natural kind.

Disconnect and head outdoors with these great activities:

There are so many great ways to spend your time outdoors unattached to any digital devices, whether you’re looking for a short activity to take a break with or you’re looking to venture further out for a day or two. We’ve prepared a few of our favourite activities for switching off outside, to help spark some ideas for you!

  • Walking your dog, as simple as it is, serves as a brilliant fix of outdoor time, and can be fit into your schedule conveniently!
  • Swimming in your local pool, cycling or playing an outdoor sport are each a fantastic way to switch off and into an activity that is not only enjoyable but also boosts your fitness!
  • Go for a leisurely walk in your nearest botanic gardens or a similar setting and take note of your favourite features or plants. This is a great activity to squeeze into your weekend or fit in after work.
  • Embark on a day hike in one of your nearest national or state parks, map out your route, pack a bag and lace up your boots for some wonderful exploration!
  • Round up your camping gear and head out for a camping trip for however long you like, even short stays can do just the trick for a relaxing getaway and a chance to disconnect.

So, which activity will you start off with when you next head outdoors and switch off the devices? If you’re looking for even more of a switch-off, Earth Hour is coming up later this month on the 28th of March at 8:30pm. Earth Hour is an annual event whereby individuals, schools, businesses and communities participate in switching off their lights to reduce their ecological footprint, in support of nature. Give it a try as another means of disconnecting and finding time for yourself this month!
